Managing Director Eng. Philip Gichuki displays the prestigious awards he won during the African Utility Week held in Cape Town, South Africa


Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Ltd Managing Director Eng. Philip Gichuki was awarded Water Utility Executive of the Year during the just concluded African Utility Week convened at Cape Town, South Africa.

The Company was also rated runners up competing against Rand Wa-ter, National Water and Sewerage Corporation and Umgeni Water.

The Water Utility Executive of the Year award celebrates the accom-plishments within the past year of an individual in a senior position from an African water utility, including organizational well-being, stakeholder management, individual industry, establishing progressive policies and or structures within the water and sanitation sector.

Eng. Gichuki won the award based on his track record at the helm of NCWSC for implementing use of technology to improve supply and bill-ing efficiency to NCWSC customers that includes: Mobile Field Assistant- a technology that allows meter readings to be relayed real time for billing that has improved meter reading accuracy and E-billing platform where customers receive and pay their bills .

In addition, the Managing Director spearheaded the provision of water to informal settlements at an affordable cost through technol-ogies such as Jisomee Mita where consumers can submit meter readings and pay their bills to the Utility through the mobile phone as well as AQ-tap water dispenser which allows customers in infor-mal settlements easier and affordable access to water.

He was also feted for his international contribution such as the GWOPA partnerships spearheaded by UN Habitat where NCWSC mentored Enugu Water & Port Harcort Water in the program as well as board membership in the African Water Association (AfWA) and as first Africa water utility to be elected to the Marseille based board of governors of the World Water Council. A think tank that sets the international water agenda.

Africa Utility Week is an annual forum that brings together African water & energy professionals, stakeholders and solution providers alike. This year’s forum was the 16th edition since inception and it’s the largest of its kind. The Company was declared runner up for the award of Water Utility of the Year amongst Umgeni Water, South Africa, Moshi Urban Water Supply & Sanitation Authority, Tanza-nia, Rand Water, South Africa
